And then the fun started, because people discovered that lionfish aren't just voracious, but also delicious. Lionfish tastes like a combination of lobster and Chilean sea bass?and since lionfish have scales, they're kosher, unlike lobster.
This month, I went back and revisited a number of the dive sites I'd seen last year. Lionfish were much scarcer, and for a reason: Restaurants on Cayman have started to serve them to eager diners. I had a plate of delicious pan-seared lionfish over pickled vegetables at Michael's Genuine in Camana Bay. Restaurants on Cayman are struggling to meet the demand. The lionfish aren't gone; when I went with Robb and Hintze to a less-visited site, I harvested 15-plus pounds in about half an hour. But the approach is clearly helping., and it got me thinking that this solution might be profitably applied to many other annoying invaders.
Click through to see some other places where people are trying to eat invasive species?and for a delectable way to prepare lionfish, courtesy of Art Hintze.

Sergey Brin has appeared on The Gavin Newsom Show on Current TV to drop a few more enticing hints about Project Glass. While showing the presenter a picture he'd taken with the AR glasses, he revealed that the prototype is controlled with a trackpad running down the right* arm. He also talked about the device's genesis in Goggle's X Lab, which he described as an "advanced skunkworks" where "far-out projects" are developed -- it's also the department that occupies most of his time. While the units he and his colleagues have been wearing are very rough prototypes, the Google co-founder shared his private hope that the tech will make its way to general release next year. You can catch the extract in full in the video after the break.
*Right for the wearer, left for the observer. It depends entirely on your perspective.

What do people think, when someone mentions ?good housewife? or ?great home maker?? Mostly, it?s all about spotless surfaces, polished utensils and bright, clean rooms. It?s also the ease and ingenious thought behind household solutions. These people are dedicated to their homes, know all the ins and outs as well as how to come on top of all situations.
Cleaning services in London will tell you that these people have their own secrets. They have tricks and short cuts gathered over the years, which set them into a league on their own, when it comes to lifting a stain. I?ve seen some of these people in action and it?s spectacular to watch. Here are three fixes I have found to be invaluable during the management of one?s household.
[1] Cream of Tartar in the Percolator. Lime scale is a common ailment for percolators around the whole world, so it?s only natural that someone somewhere has thought of ways to work a solution to wish away this nasty build-up. Who could have known that three table spoons of cream of tarter are the answer to everyone?s prayer. Stir three spoons into enough water to cover the whole percolator and then let the appliance do all the work. Once you have boiled the mixture, it all boils down to the good old-fashioned elbow grease.
[2] Fabric Softener Sheets for a Fresh Scent. Have you tried everything to remove a nasty smell out of your shoes to no avail? Are you tired of wasting money on sprays for your feet? Turn to the trusty fabric softener sheets, because they will be able to remove the scent out of just about every pair of shoes. Lay a sheet in your shoe and marvel at the results in the morning, because the smells will be a thing of the past. This works quite well for smells coming underneath your car seats.
[3] Soy Sauce Ice Packs. Although not exactly a cleaning material, these miniature ice packs can be of use, if you hurt yourself during the cleaning, just pop up your freezer and take this mini ice pack to sooth your pain. How do you make these? If you order some take-out and you get delivered some extra soy sauce (mustard works as well), pop it in the freezer. Trust me, if you or your close ones are hyperactive or accident-prone, then you will not regret this decision.
Cleaning services in London have their own professional secrets, but that doesn?t mean you shouldn?t as well. However, always remember that your house will always benefit from a highly professional service. After all, that is why professionals are here for.

Canadian Olympians Martha McCabe of Toronto, Brent Hayden of Mission, B.C., and Scott Dickens of Ancaster, Ont., each won a gold medal on Saturday at the Mel Zajac Jr-Canada Cup swimming competition.
In the women?s 200-metre breaststroke, McCabe produced a strong second length to win in two minutes 25.81 seconds. Tera van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., also headed to London, followed in 2:27.93 and Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., was third in 2:30.44.
In the men?s 200-metre breaststroke, Dickens collected his second victory by placing first in 2:13.80. Edmonton?s Richard Funk was second in 2:16.86 and Andrew Poznikoff of Burnaby, B.C., third in 2:20.36. Dickens is qualified for the 100 and 200 breaststroke for London.
In the men?s 50-metre freestyle, Hayden earned the win in 22.76 while his Olympic teammate Tommy Gossland of Vancouver was sixth.

Norman Harvel is growing old under a mountain of debt.
At 60, Harvel faces medical and credit card bills topping $80,000. Yet Harvel is unable to work, having been injured at a job site more a decade ago. The former building maintenance worker now lives on $904 a month in Social Security disability benefits.
"I was so sick and tired of getting the bills, so I would throw them away," Harvel said from his tiny basement apartment in Dundalk. "I've had to try to tell myself that it's something I will wake up from."
In Maryland and across the country, baby boomers and other older Americans are drowning in debt, say credit counselors, elder law attorneys and economists. A growing number of older people in the Baltimore region are seeking financial assistance and help finding work, as well as filing for bankruptcy, say those who work with senior citizens.
"It's supposed to be the golden years, but it's not, at least financially," said Nicholas Del Pizzo III, a Dundalk attorney whose clients include many financially struggling seniors seeking bankruptcy help.
From 1992 to 2007, the percentage of households of people in their mid-50s and older with housing and consumer debt rose from 53.8 percent to 63 percent, according to the Washington-based Employee Benefit Research Institute's research using government data. The problem is even more acute for those 55 to 64, with 81.7 percent carrying debt.
Over the same period, the average overall debt for these 55-and-older households more than doubled, to $70,370, according to EBRI.
In Harvel's case, he piled up debt over years of taking care of his sick wife, Loretta, who died last year at 63. She had diabetes, was on dialysis and required two open-heart surgeries, Harvel said.
Health care bills are a leading factor contributing to the indebtedness of graying Americans.
Workers are paying more for employer-sponsored health insurance, while costs for medical care are skyrocketing. Eligibility for Medicare doesn't begin until age 65, and it does not cover such expenses as hearing aids, dental care and long-term nursing care.
Meanwhile, more older homeowners are carrying mortgage debt into retirement. Making matters worse, declining housing values have cut into what had been a safety net for older Americans and retirees: their homes.
Some older consumers also are saddled with credit card debt. Among Americans 65 and older, for instance, the average amount of credit card debt rose to $10,235 in 2008 from $8,138 three years earlier, the largest percentage increase among all age groups, according to a survey by Demos, a New York-based public policy institute.
Moreover, other older Americans are haunted by student loans years after they, or their children, left school. Adults 50 and older owe 17 percent of the nation's $870 billion in student-loan debt, according to a March report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The financial crisis also depleted savings and retirement accounts, contributing to a "perfect storm" of precarious finances among older Americans, said Marceline White, executive director of Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition.
One illness or emergency can throw a senior into debt, White said.
"If everything goes perfectly, they could manage," she said. "If something goes wrong, something unexpected happens, they don't have the liquidity to move on."
While recent government data shows declining consumer debt as families cut back on spending and saved more money, not all older Americans can follow suit. Not only are most older Americans past their prime earning years, but many must dip into their savings to stay on top of bills ? while those still working may make less than they did in previous years.
Low-income seniors with excessive debt are having a hard time digging out in an environment in which "job growth is slow and salary increases are minimal," said Craig Copeland, a senior research associate at EBRI, who wrote the study on debt among the elderly.
David Jones, president of the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies, said debtors age 60 and older now represent the fastest-growing segment seeking help at member offices across the country.
The trend has been especially evident in the last two years, a period in which the eldest of the baby boomers began retiring, Jones said.

SAN ANTONIO -- Trailing in the fourth quarter, Gregg Popovich snarled an order in the huddle that the NBA Coach of the Year punctuated with a sharp and angry sweep of his hand.
"I want some nasty!"
But truthfully, Popovich was already getting what he really wanted: the San Antonio Spurs finally in a game they might actually lose.
Popovich's caught-on-camera "nasty" command in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals is likely coming soon to T-shirts, Internet memes and the lexicon of the NBA playoffs for the foreseeable future. But after beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 on Sunday night for their 19th win in a row ? tying the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs ? Popovich wasn't flustered by the near-loss.
He was almost grateful for it.
"We wanted it about 15 games ago," Popovich said. "At least I did."
Manu Ginobili scored 26 points as the Spurs escaped a tantalizing near-upset for the young Thunder, who came closer than anyone to beating the Spurs for the first time in 46 days. But a nine-point lead didn't last after the famously mercurial 63-year-old Popovich huddled his lagging team together in the fourth and told them to "get nasty."
"I said that?" Popovich said afterward.
A nationally television audience heard it.
"The heat of the game, stuff comes up," Popovich said. "So I talked to them about they've got to get a little bit uglier, get a little more nasty, play with more fiber and take it to these guys. Meaning you have to drive it, you have to shoot it."
And when they did, the Thunder couldn't keep up.
Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 27 points. Russell Westbrook had 17, and insisted he was OK after taking a spill that was nasty in its own right ? face first, bracing his fall with his hands and sitting under the basket for more than a minute while the entire Thunder bench walked across the court to check on their All-Star point guard.
"I shot good shots, made good passes," Durant said. "Unfortunately, we lost."
After being held to just 16 third-quarter points, San Antonio scored 39 in the fourth. Westbrook chalked it up to a defensive breakdown that "got out of hand" but it still left the Thunder in search of the road win they'll need to in this series to reach the NBA finals for the first time since the franchise moved to Oklahoma City in 2009.
Game 2 is Tuesday night.
"How it happened is irrelevant," Thunder guard Derrick Fisher said of letting a lead slip away. "Whether we lose by 20 or lose by one, we lost."
That's something the Spurs haven't been able to say since April 11. They joined the 2001 Lakers as the only other team to carry a winning streak this long in the playoffs ? and that Los Angeles team did so on its way to a championship.
The Spurs matched the fourth-longest streak in NBA history, and with one more will become just the fourth team to surpass 20. Tim Duncan had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Tony Parker shook off a dismal start to finish with 18 points.
And of getting "nasty"?
"Pop's always trying to motivate us," Parker said.
But it was Ginobili who steered the Spurs to strike first in a highly anticipated matchup of the West's top two teams for practically the entire regular season. In his first game against the Thunder this year ? he was sidelined by injury in the three regular-season meetings ? Ginobili put up a playoff high after sputtering through the first two series.
"It just happened," Ginobili said. "I don't know how exactly because I haven't scored like this all season long, but it happened and I am very happy about it."
On the other end, Oklahoma City's own Big Three struggled to find its shot early before awakening in the second half. Durant, Westbrook and James Harden at one point through the second quarter were 5 of 21 ? a typically ominous stat line for a trio that had been responsible for nearly 70 percent of Oklahoma City's points through the playoffs so far.
The Thunder were ousted in the Western Conference finals a year ago and were in position for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs until being overtaken by the Spurs in the final month of the season. But it was a fittingly close opener for two franchises with so many similarities.
That includes Thunder general manager Sam Presti ? the architect of the Thunder's rapid turnaround from a 23-win season to consecutive Western Conference finals in just four years ? getting his big break in the NBA as an intern in San Antonio.
And the Thunder didn't even need their own Big Three to keep things close.
They leaned on none more so than Fisher, whose famous game-winner for the Lakers on this same court in the 2004 playoffs has made "0.4 seconds" a phrase that needs no further explanation to the Spurs. Eight years later, and the oldest player in this series at 37, Fisher already met his playoff average at halftime and finished with 13 points.
Gary Neal added 12 points and was the only other Spurs player in double figures.
Harden lost in the first round of his matchup with Ginobili, who's also a lefty and a former Sixth Man of the Year winner. Harden finished with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting but started by missing nine of his first dozen shots.
Tipping off another conference finals couldn't happen soon enough for Oklahoma City. With nothing to do but prepare for the Spurs all week ? and be asked about the Spurs ? the Thunder grew weary of questions about being perceived underdogs. About not having the same championship pedigree. About how they'll possibly stop a team rolling through one of the 10 longest winning streaks in NBA history.
So repetitive were the questions that Durant, visibly annoyed, suggested earlier this week that someone instead ask how the Thunder are going "to come at" the Spurs. That didn't stop Oklahoma City from facing more of the same at shootaround Sunday morning, when Thunder coach Scott Brooks tried quashing again the idea his team was somehow intimidated.
"They're not going to be in awe. They're going to have respect for them," Brooks said. "We know we can beat them."
They've still got to prove it.
Notes: Spurs C DeJuan Blair has given the Thunder fits in his three NBA seasons, including 22 points on them in a March win. But San Antonio's starting center for practically the entire season didn't play for the third consecutive playoff game. "The game will tell us what's appropriate and what's not," Popovich said before tipoff. ...Just because a Boston-Oklahoma City matchup in still possible in the NBA finals doesn't mean center Kendrick Perkins is hopeful about facing his old team. "I really don't care," Perkins said of the Celtics advancing. ...Gov. Rick Perry took in his first Spurs game this year, sitting courtside next to Spurs owner Peter Holt, a major donor to the former Republican presidential candidate.

A seaman has sued his employer, in federal court, for injuries he allegedly sustained while working in unsafe conditions. Similar accidents, involving maintenance and cure, occur in major ports, throughout the nation such as Seattle, with some regularity. While unfortunate, maritime employers understand the inherent dangers and should do everything possible to safeguard their employees.
The seaman fell off an unstable ladder while working as a deckhand on a tugboat. While tying off two empty barges and a crane barge, he placed the stepladder against one of the barges. He fell off the ladder and crashed to the tugboat deck.
His lower back struck the deck and also a steel bit on the deck of the crane barge. The lawsuit he filed against the tugboat company alleges negligence for "failing to provide adequate equipment" on the craft. The suit also accuses the employer of failing to assign adequate personnel to complete the barge tie-off task, while ordering crew members to perform under unsafe conditions.
The defendants also face charges of failing to properly supervise personnel and a failure to train and supervise the crew, including the injured seaman. To complete the allegations, the seaman claims he was forced to work under unsafe conditions, leading to a personal injury.
The lawsuit seeks damages for physical pain and suffering, psychological pain and anguish, medical costs, lost wages, loss of earning capacity, disfigurement and disability, maintenance, cure, and interest, along with court and legal fees. Filed in U.S. District Court, it is currently unclear when the judge will hear motions and/or arguments from legal counsel.
Do you have any suggestions to reduce accidents and personal injuries of this type?

The United States Navy foresees a future where the rising cost of oil will create operational vulnerabilities. In response, it has devised a massive online game to crowd source innovative ideas from the public to sink its energy challenges.
Researchers at the Navy?s Naval Postgraduate School and the Institute for the Future, a California non-profit focused on sustainability issues, today announced an upcoming game called EnergyMMOWGLI. The game will launch starting tomorrow, Tuesday, May 22, and run for three days.
The game immerses players in a dystopian year 2022; energy security is costly (a barrel of oil costs as much as a dishwasher) and resources are strained. Players battle with their wits by brainstorming how to diversify energy supply with alternative fuels, increase efficiency, and reduce overall fuel consumption.
EnergyMMOWGLI is ?an examination of what our energy future looks like if we fail to act now. Every day that petroleum prices increase, it erodes our ability to train for and execute operations that our nation demands of us. Little by little, that results in decreased combat capability, and that is something we simply cannot accept,? said Cmdr. James Goudreau, director of the Navy Energy Coordination Office.
Another game announced last year focused on devising strategies to combat the rising threat of piracy along trade routes. The scenario was set off the coast of Somalia, and over 16,000 players registered to participate.
The Navy is embracing a trend known as ?serious gaming,? which has entered both business and government organizations. My friend and past colleague Alex Handy today wrote about how a Gartner research study found that more than 50 percent of business that manage ?innovation processes? will ?gamify? those processes by 2015.
Serious gamers have been gathering for an annual summit since 2004 to discuss the ramifications of gameplay upon society. One of its initial participants was Alcoa, which uses gaming to instruct workers how to safely operate forklifts.
The Navy is also taking its gaming very seriously. ?We hope to increase the awareness of energy security as a national security issue as well as stimulating discussion that will allow the Navy to achieve greater energy resiliency and combat readiness,? Cmdr. Goudreau said.
Here?s a preview of the gameplay:

LONDON (AP) ? The stars of the romantic comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting" had plenty of praise for each other ? and a warning about making out on the hood of a car ? during the film's British premiere in London on Tuesday.
Cameron Diaz, Chace Crawford and Matthew Morrison, Anna Kendrick and Rodrigo Santoro were among the actors who walked the red carpet at the British Film Institute's IMAX theater.
The film ? inspired by the bestselling book by Heidi Murkoff, and also featuring Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Quaid, Cheryl Cole and Chris Rock ? looks at love through the eyes of five interconnected couples as they experience pregnancy and childbirth.
Kendrick and Crawford were one of the couples with some steamy moments in the film. But the reality wasn't quite that great, Kendrick said.
"The scene where we kind of make out on the hood of a car, it all looks pretty sexy and cool and fun, but I would not recommend trying to do that," she said. "It is uncomfortable. My legs were covered in bruises the next day. So I hope that it looks really nice, but it was actually quite a painful experience."
Director Kirk Jones gave high marks to Diaz, saying she was "phenomenal" in the scene where she gave birth.
"The concern as the director is always that you turn up on set, and an actress doesn't want to give her all because she'll be thinking, 'I don't want to look too sweaty, I don't want to look too red, you know, I don't want to really go for this,'" he said. "But she went for it, in a big way, yeah."
Diaz's onscreen partner Matthew Morrison also praised her, this time for her dancing skills.
"There's this one part where she wraps her legs around me, and I have to spin her around, and I said, 'Hold me tight because I don't want to, like, drop you and it's gonna help with me turning you around,'" he said. "And she squeezed me so hard I couldn't even breathe. It was, like, 'Damn it, let go, let go.' She's so strong, she's so strong."
Singer and former "X Factor" judge Cole takes on her first acting role in the movie as a judge in a celebrity dance-off contest.
Diaz gave her a thumbs-up, saying, "She played it beautifully, she was fun and entertaining and she provided a great energy for the set."

ANN ARBOR, Mich. When thousands of psychiatrists attend their field's largest annual meeting each year, the presentations they hear about research into drug treatments report overwhelmingly on positive results.
That's the finding of a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology by two young psychiatrists from the University of Michigan and Yale University, who analyzed the presentations given at two recent meetings of the American Psychiatric Association.
Of 278 studies presented at the 2009 and 2010 APA meetings that compared at least two medicines against each other for any psychiatric illness, they found that 195 had been supported by industry, and 83 funded by other means. The authors then evaluated the studies without knowing which kind of support each one had.
Of the industry-supported studies, 97.4 percent reported results that were positive toward the medicine that the study was designed to test, and 2.6 percent reported mixed results. No industry-sponsored studies with negative results were found.
In contrast, when industry was not the source of funding, 68.7 percent of the presentations were positive, and 24.1 percent contained mixed results, while 7.2 percent contained negative results.
This 'presentation bias', in which mostly good news about medicines gets reported at meetings, echoes the 'publication bias' that has been seen in research published in major journals, says Srijan Sen, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychiatry at the U-M Medical School who led the study while in his residency at Yale.
While attending the APA's massive annual meeting, he noted the large industry presence and emphasis on research involving medicines that were still "on patent" and being actively marketed to both psychiatrists attending the conference. He teamed with Yale psychiatry resident Maya Prabhu, M.D., M.Sc., now a consulting forensic psychiatrist at Yale, to do a formal review.
"This analysis suggests that the APA meeting might be being used as an opportunity to make drugs seem more effective than they are," he says.
Meanwhile, research on "talk therapy" treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy which doesn't have industry backing gets less attention, even though there is growing evidence that such non-drug therapies can have as much effect as medicines in illnesses such as depression.
Since the APA meeting is a major source of continuing medical education credit for psychiatrists, and a hub for psychiatry residents just starting out in the field, the bias has the potential to affect their clinical care when they return home.
Sen notes that the research journals and funding agencies have tried to confront research bias in journal articles by requiring pharmaceutical companies to register the clinical trials they are conducting and include the registration number when publishing the study. This allows interested individuals to see which trials are being reported in the medical literature, and whether the trial results are interpreted according to the original study design.
For instance, if a drug trial is designed to test long-term results from a particular treatment, but a paper is published showing positive results over a much shorter term, that could be an indication of bias. Research meetings could require a similar practice, Sen says. And, APA could be more selective in accepting poster presentation submissions.
If nothing else, Sen says, attendees at the APA's meeting and perhaps other large gatherings of psychiatrists should be aware of the positive bias of the research they will hear about at the meeting.
And, non-industry funding for research especially research to compare older "off patent" drugs that aren't being marketed by industry is also important, he says. The federal government has funded large comparison studies in depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, he notes and these mostly showed that the generic medications that have lost their patent protection are just as effective as newer, patent-protected ones. But even still, psychiatrists prescribe the generic ones far less often than the brand-name patent-protected ones.

The study was supported by grants MH095109 and UL1RR024986 from the National Institutes of Health. In 2009, Sen was a trainee member of an APA committee involved in soliciting the scientific reports to be presented at the annual meeting.
