Hult International Business School Reaches Out to Alumni with LinkedIn's College Pilot Program

Hult International Business School is one of six universities selected to participate in LinkedIn's College Pilot Program. According to the LinkedIn blog, the goals of the pilot program are to help LinkedIn gain a better of understanding of the needs of students and alumni as they build their professional identities online and to provide schools with tools and access to LinkedIn's products to help schools support their students and alumni with career development and build stronger alumni networks.

Hult International Business School reported it will use the pilot program to connect with its 6,000 alumni worldwide and encourage communication between its current students and alumni. Hult's Alumni Association also plans to use LinkedIn to stay up-to-date on graduates' career progress and use data from LinkedIn to create job opportunities.

According to information released by Hult, more than 60 percent of its alumni currently use LinkedIn, and the school said it anticipates that number to grow to 80 percent through the use of LinkedIn's customized data mining tools to help target and recruit new members to Hult's professional group on LinkedIn.

Hult International Business School offers a number of bachelor's and master's degrees in business at its campuses in Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai, and Shanghai, which make for an internationally diverse student body, which Holt claims will "provide LinkedIn with new insights into the global employment market."

The other universities selected for the program are Michigan State University, University of California San Diego, University of Rochester, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Syracuse University, as well as the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.

The LinkedIn College Pilot Program is currently a closed group, but schools that are interested in more information or other partnership opportunities can e-mail highered@linkedin.com.

Homemade tech to reduce India's cyber threats

India should be using only locally-developed technology to fend off cyberespionage activities as foreign-made equipment can be manipulated by other countries for spying.

According to a report by the Economic Times on Sunday, cybersecurity analyst Jiten Jain said there are countries which are subsidizing their domestic IT companies to sell products abroad below cost prices in order to facilitate spying on other nations. This happens not just between feuding nations, but among friendly countries too, he said.

"Only using complete, indigenously-developed technology can save [India] from espionage," Jain said.

The cybersecurity analyst added telecom networks and smartphones can be bugged, and there have been cases in which the equipment automatically updates itself without the user's knowledge. Malware is also evolving and can self-destruct or be programmed for one-time use during the critical stage of a hack, he said.

The report added that Indian authorities urged ethical hackers to work with them to spread awareness and detect vulnerabilities in the networks.

In 2011, a Malaysian university professor expressed similar sentiments as Jain. The professor said Malaysia must develop its own IT security software to reduce data leaks and intelligence breaches from foreign software.

IP Osgoode ? Streaming of a Live Sporting Event is not a User Right

On May 13, 2012, the Supreme Court of Israel gave a landmark decision in Civil Appeal 9183/09 The Football Association Premier League Ltd v John Doe. The Court overturned a controversial decision by Judge Michal Agmon-Gonen of the District Court in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. In that case, Judge Agmon-Gonen used the mechanism of legal transplantation to introduce into Israeli copyright law the doctrine of users? rights similar to that laid down by the Canadian Supreme Court in the CCH case.

The English Premier League requested that internet providers reveal the name of an unknown person who infringed their copyright through online streaming of football games (known as soccer in North America). The unknown individual managed a website ? LiveFooty ? where he streamed live sporting events. On his website, he wrote: ?Hi all! I have created this site, as my personal aim, to be able to watch LIVE football/soccer, basketball matches, etc, without having to pay a cent! Now you can enjoy this too. With LiveFooty, you can watch all the interesting sporting events FREE?

Streaming on the Internet, whether on-demand or live, has become a fundamental channel for communication, sharing of information and as a supplement to traditional downloading. Despite these social advantages, streaming creates serious legal problems. It can amount to an infringement of several of the copyright owner?s exclusive rights, such as the right to communicate the work to the public, and the right to reproduce the work. Despite this, Judge Agmon-Gonen rejected the Premier League?s request and declared that the streaming in this case was lawful and did not infringe copyright, because it did not comply with the statutory definition of broadcasting, and the streaming of live sporting events to the public has a social goal. This brought her to re-balance copyright and declare that users, as opposed to the situation before the enactment of the 2007 Copyright Act, have rights.

On appeal, the Supreme Court overturned the District Court?s decision. The Court held that, although the actual sporting event is not protected by copyright, the production and shooting of such an event is an original work. Streaming is an act of broadcasting within the meaning of section 14 of the Copyright Act. The Court rejected the users? rights doctrine noting that: ?The legal language used in the 2007 Act gives no indication that the legislature?s goal was to recreate the existing balance in copyright and transform defences to rights?. The Court held that streaming of soccer is an infringement and our John Doe cannot find rescue in the fair use doctrine.

Although the Supreme Court was unanimous with regards to the case for infringement, it was divided with regards to revealing the identity of the infringer. The majority agreed that, under the current law, the identity of the person cannot be disclosed. Consequently, the Premier League won only a partial victory. This partial happiness cannot take the Premier League to the bank, because John Doe is still John Doe.

Although I think the Court was right in finding that streaming of a live sporting event is not innocent, I cannot agree with the reasons for rejecting the users? rights doctrine. Judge Agmon-Gonen was pioneering in her judgment and legal transplantation is a living organism within the Israeli legal system. That was how the Supreme Court imported the US fair use doctrine into Israeli law. Furthermore, the social and cultural implications of strict and narrow interpretations of the newly enacted fair use doctrine dismiss the advantages in this open-ended doctrine; it may end up with unnoticeably re-enacting the closed list of exceptions of the fair dealing doctrine which the legislature found too limited.

Still, on the eve of the Olympic Games and the recent rulings of the Canadian Supreme Court on fair dealings, it remains an interesting question whether streaming of track & field events amount to a user right within the meaning of Judge Agmon-Gonen?s ruling. Speaking of the Olympic Games and Israel, it is interesting to note, from another perspective, a recent confusing decision of the same court issuing an injunction preventing the Israeli Olympic Committee from using a character ? Shpitzik (on the left) ? as a mascot because it infringes the rights of Israel Education Television in one of their kids TV stars, Kishkashta (on the right) ? a singing cactus.

Colo. theater lacked security, unlike some peers

Police continue to monitor the area around the Century 16 theater, Saturday, July 28, 2012 in Aurora, Colo. Twelve people were killed and over 50 wounded in a shooting attack on July 20, at the packed theater during a showing of the Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." Police have identified the suspected shooter as James Holmes, 24. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

(AP) ? The Colorado movie theater complex that was the scene of a gunman's massacre this month didn't have any uniformed security guards on duty the night of the shooting, even though other theaters operated by the same company did provide such protection for the busy premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

It's impossible to know whether guards ? often off-duty police officers ? at the Aurora Century 16 would have spotted the suspected gunman, James Holmes, and thwarted the attack that left 12 moviegoers dead and dozens wounded on July 20.

Officers hired as guards are generally armed and usually spend their time roaming the complex, checking bags or dealing with minor disputes.

Cinemark provided off-duty police guards at the Aurora theater on busy Friday and Saturday nights. As for other nights of the week, theater operators decide on a case-by-case basis whether to hire security, depending on the likelihood of trouble. The attack came early Friday, shortly after the midnight screening of the Batman film began.

Larry Lowak, whose son Brent was among the wounded, said security personnel on the scene possibly could have stopped the gunman, and he was dismayed to learn that guards weren't on hand.

"If you bring in security on Friday or Saturday, you sure as hell want to bring it in for this particular function," Lowak said.

Plano, Texas-based Cinemark, which operates the Aurora theater, declined to explain why guards weren't provided in Aurora that night and declined to discuss safety policies in general.

Through interviews with police officers and officials outside the theater company, The Associated Press was able to identify places around the country that did use armed security workers for the July 19-20 Batman showings ? including places like Beaumont, Texas; Lake Charles, La., and Tupelo, Miss.

Some other locations, including a Cinema Century 16 theater in the western Denver suburb of Lakewood, did not have security.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates has said that the Cinemark in Aurora normally uses off-duty officers to provide security on weekend nights but did not have any working for the July 19 showings that went into the next morning. The theater does not have an unusually high record of complaints or crimes, police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said.

In Moosic, Pa., Cinemark has worked for years with off-duty officers from the local police department ? typically on Fridays and Saturdays ? and authorities said they were asked to provide two officers on July 19 because the midnight showing was likely to be a major event.

"If they're expecting large crowds, they call our department for additional police presence," said Moosic Borough Police Officer James Giehl.

Two major multiplexes in Amarillo, Texas, including one Cinemark facility, also ensured that off-duty uniformed police officers were present for the first screenings of the Batman film. Amarillo Police Cpl. Jerry Neufeld said that the off-duty officers work in pairs; the town's theaters made a point of asking for them on the busy opening night.

There were no incidents at the screenings, and Neufeld said he heard that people were, as always, happy to see people there to deal with any dangers.

"When they're there, they're visible, people see them and people come in and say, 'hey man, we're glad you're here,'" Neufeld said. "It gives people a sense of calm."

The Aurora shooting has stirred discussion about appropriate security precautions at gathering places commonly considered safe from the cares and worries of the outside world. Experts say that security at public venues has increased substantially over the past decade, but they also note that it's impossible to maintain perfect safety at all times.

Officials have said the Aurora shooting suspect bought a ticket to the midnight showing and went into the theater as part of the crowd. A federal law enforcement official said suspect Holmes is believed to have propped open an exit door in the theater as the movie was playing, donned protective ballistic gear, re-entered about a half-hour into the film and opened fire.

Aurora police said the suspect tossed two gas canisters into the crowd and had an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun, and two .40-caliber Glock handguns.

Some theaters have added security guards for all nights of the week since the shooting, and police departments around the country have also conducted extra patrols that focus to movie theaters, though it's not clear if those shifts will be permanent. AMC Theatres has barred people from wearing masks or bringing fake weapons inside its buildings.

Many theaters, including the Cinemark in Aurora, prohibit patrons from bringing in their concealed weapons they use for personal protection.

That irks people like Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, who said that he has refused to go to Aurora theater because of that ban.

"What could have stopped this is law-abiding citizens being allowed to carry," Brown insisted.

Lowak, the father of the shooting survivor, also said he believes people carrying concealed weapons might have helped limit the bloodshed.

But Hubert Williams, former head of the Newark police department and president of the Police Foundation, said that the idea that average citizens with guns could keep a theater safe only makes sense "on a piece of paper."

"Reality is much more complicated. What if you pull a gun out, take aim and someone else thinks you're the shooter?" he asked. "Would you stand up against an AR-15, AK-47 military-style assault weapon? Give me a break."

Making A Nice Living With Opt-In Email Marketing ? Web Design ...

One of the best ways to earn a nice living on the internet simply and easily is via an opt-in email newsletter. You can gather a lot of subscribers, and market to them over and over again without fail. The money is definitely in the list, and the more you focus on generating leads and getting more subscribers, the more successful your business will become.

I speak from experience when I say this. You will want to make your email list responsive. In some niches, this is easier said than done. For some niches, you will find that one niche is 3 times more responsive than another niche that is very competitive. Typically, competitive niches are ?internet marketing?, ?weight loss?, ?dieting?, ?make money online?, and even ?forex trading?.

All of these niches are tough to make money in, but it?s definitely possible to make money in these niches. For your sake though, you probably don?t want to enter into these niches. You will be better off in a small niche that doesn?t have a lot of competition, and that is very responsive.

If you want to start to see recurring sales in your business, you will need around at least 5,000 subscribers to your opt-in email newsletter. This may take some time to build, but if you?re using paid advertising, it won?t be that tough. But if you?re using free marketing only, you will find that it will take a longer time to monetize as opposed to paying for the traffic.

Now there are all kinds of ways to make money with your opt-in email list. One of the best things that you can do is to build trust. Building trust means getting your prospects to like you, and getting your prospects to look forward to what you have to offer in your internet business.

Your products and services should be stellar, and you should strive to make sure that you provide excellent customer service to your customers ? and even to your leads. Answer any questions that they might have regarding issues in your niche, and make yourself standout as the obvious expert in your niche.

This is the best way to build trust with your subscribers. If you can do this, then you will stand a good chance of getting these people to like you and to buy from you, all because you distilled some excellent information to the people who contacted you. Plus, you can offer this same support and information on your blog.

Some people will come and post comments on your blog, and you will want to comment to their responses, so that you can improve the chances of them sticking around on your blog, and waiting for the next blog post to be made. Small things like this can make a big difference when it comes to making money in your online business.

Take these tips and use them to have the email marketing success that you?re looking for in your business.

Good luck with using these tips to make more money in your online business today.
