Iran prosecutor: Blogger died in police custody

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's state prosecutor confirmed Monday that a jailed blogger died in police custody last week and that wounds were found on his body, the first official confirmation of his death while being held.

The U.S. State Department and a press freedom group have called for investigation of the "suspicious death."

The prosecutor's statement came a day after Iran's parliament announced it would probe reports on the circumstances of Sattar Beheshti's death.

Prosecutor Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehi told reporters that Beheshti was detained Oct. 30 for alleged cybercrimes and taken to Evin prison in north Tehran the next day. Beheshti was handed over to cyber police for interrogation the same day, He died Nov. 3.

"The coroner's office has provided a detailed report saying that signs of wounds were found in five places on this person's body, including foot, hand, back and one of his thighs, but no broken bones," the semiofficial Mehr news agency quoted Ejehi as saying.

Ejehi said a final report on the cause of Beheshti's death may take as long as 45 days to release. He said copy of a letter of complaint in Beheshti's name against his interrogator was found.

The semiofficial ISNA news agency quoted Ejehi as saying that Beheshti charged in the letter that he was subject to "threats, insults and beatings."

Ejehi said Iran's judiciary chief, Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani, has ordered a full inquiry into the death.

The government-owned Iran Network news website said three interrogators involved in the case have been arrested. The website, inn.ir, did not provide further details.

The Tehran police chief, Gen. Hossein Sajedinia, also confirmed that Beheshti died while in cyber police custody.

"The deceased had been handed over to cyber police for completion of investigation under a judicial order for a period of time," Sajedinia told Asr-e-Iran news website Monday.

The 35-year-old Beheshti was said to be a factory worker. He was not a well-known activist.

Dozens of bloggers and journalists have been arrested in widespread crackdowns in Iran in recent years.

In 2010, Iran's parliament played a major role in probing the deaths in detention of three people during the unrest that followed the disputed 2009 presidential elections. The inquiry led to the dismissal of several judicial and police officials.

Fiscal cliff blues may lead to correction

Wall Street's post-election sell-off may gather steam in the coming weeks as worries mount about the looming fiscal cliff and technical weakness suggests a possible correction ahead.

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 closed below its 200-day moving average - a measure of the market's long-term trend - on Thursday for the first time in five months, and ended below it again on Friday. More than half of the Dow components are trading below key technical levels.

"I don't think you have to panic here, but I think you really want to be looking for the market to move lower for the next couple of months," said Frank Gretz, market analyst and technician for Wellington Shields & Co., a brokerage in New York. "I think the next rally is the rally you want to sell."

At the heart of the market's worry is whether U.S. leaders can come to agreement on some $600 billion in spending cuts and tax increases that are due to kick in early next year. Some fear dramatic cutbacks could send the U.S. economy into another recession.

The prospect of higher tax rates in 2013 is driving investors to sell shares as they seek to decrease the tax impact from their positions this year and next.

"You would have thought the fiscal cliff scenarios would have been already mulled over and priced in, but they weren't. It's almost like the market has ADD and can only focus on one thing at a time," said Natalie Trunow, chief investment officer of equities at Calvert Investment Management in Bethesda, Maryland, whose firm manages about $13 billion in assets.

The S&P 500 fell 2.4 percent for the week, its worst weekly percentage drop since June. The index is now down 6.4 percent from its intraday high for the year of 1,474.51 reached on September 14. That drop puts the benchmark index below its 50-day moving average, but not yet into correction territory, defined as a 10 percent drop from a peak.?

Reading the technical signs?
The S&P 500 has been trading in a range between the 50-day moving average of 1,433.50 and the 200-day moving average of 1,380.98 for about two weeks. A significant break below that lower level could be a precursor to further weakness, analysts said.

"There's a technical breakdown in the market that indicates further losses," said Adam Sarhan, chief executive of Sarhan Capital in New York. "A 10 percent drop is the next big line in the sand."

The primary driver of stock prices in coming weeks looks likely to be investor concern about the U.S. fiscal situation.

In a sign of the risks involved, comments by President Barack Obama on Friday about the upcoming negotiations caused stocks to sharply cut their gains.

The president, who defeated Republican candidate Mitt Romney in Tuesday's U.S. election, outlined a position for the fiscal issues on Friday that is far apart from that of his political opponents, suggesting a long battle is to come.

"If the market anticipates a resolution to the fiscal cliff or Europe or any of the other bricks in the wall of worry, we could easily take off," Sarhan said.

Seventeen of the Dow's 30 components are trading below both their 50-day and 200-day moving averages, while another eight are under their 50-day levels, but not their 200. Only five components - Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Home Depot, Johnson & Johnson and Travelers - are above both support levels.

Another big negative for the market has been heavy selling of Apple shares. The stock of the world's biggest company, ranked by market capitalization, lost 5.2 percent this week, weighing heavily on both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. The stock is down 22.4 percent from its September 21 all-time intraday high of $705.07.

Big retailers' report cards?
The election and fiscal cliff concerns, which came on the heels of Superstorm Sandy and its devastating effects on many parts of the U.S. Northeast, have captured so much attention that they've overshadowed weakness coming from third-quarter earnings.

With results in from 449 of the S&P 500 companies, third-quarter earnings now are estimated to have declined 0.3 percent from a year ago, which is slightly better than the forecast at the start of the reporting period. Results have been especially weak on the revenue side, however, with just 38 percent of companies beating on sales, Thomson Reuters data showed.

But recent stronger economic data, including a report on Friday showing consumer sentiment at more than a five-year high in early November, suggests that retailers, many of which have yet to report, could be among the stronger performers this earnings period.

Next week, results are expected from such big names as Target, Wal-Mart and Home Depot.

Consumer discretionary companies have outperformed the broader S&P 500 in earnings, with 72 percent of the companies in that sector beating analysts' expectations, compared with 63 percent for the S&P 500 as a whole.

Investors will be paying close attention to those results with the holiday shopping period around the corner, said Rick Meckler, president of LibertyView Capital Management in Jersey City, New Jersey, which oversees about $1 billion in assets.

"It's really the beginning of the Christmas sell season, and I think there's going to be a lot of interest with the outlook for that season and how promotional companies are going to be," Meckler said.

Using the world's most powerful X-ray laser in California, an international research team discovered a surprising behaviour of atoms: with a single X-ray flash, the group led by Daniel Rolles from the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) in Hamburg (Germany) was able to kick a record number of 36 electrons at once out of a xenon atom. According to theoretical calculations, these are significantly more than should be possible at this energy of the X-ray radiation. The team present their unexpected observations in the journal "Nature Photonics". CFEL is a collaboration of DESY, the Max Planck Society and the University of Hamburg.

When an atom loses electrons, it acquires a positive electric charge it becomes ionized. This ionization is stronger the more electrons are torn from the atom. The researchers led by Rolles, who is working in the Max Planck Advanced Study Group at CFEL, had fired intense X-ray laser flashes from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the US National Accelerator Laboratory SLAC in California at atoms of the noble gas xenon. With 1.5 kiloelectronvolts (1.5 keV), the particles of light (photons) of the X-ray radiation had around a thousand times more energy than visible light. When such a high-energy photon hits an electron in the xenon atomic shell, its energy is transferred to the electron. Through this collision, the electron can be ejected from the atomic shell depending on how strongly it is bound.

According to calculations, up to 26 of the 54 electrons of the noble gas could be kicked out at the energy employed, the remaining are too strongly bound. In fact, however, the researchers found that up to 36 electrons flew from the atoms. "To our knowledge, this is the highest ionization that has ever been achieved in an atom using a single electromagnetic pulse," says Rolles, who will lead a Helmholtz Young Investigators group at DESY in the future. "Our observation shows that the existing theoretical approaches have to be modified."

What causes the "impossible" ionization is a so-called resonance: in the energy range used, xenon electrons can absorb a lot of X-ray radiation. Some are thus directly ejected from the atom, while others go into an excited, i.e. more energetic, state, but are still bound to the atom. When one of the excited electrons returns to its initial state, in turn energy is released, which can give another excited electron the necessary extra nudge to kick it out of the atom. In rare cases, the already excited electron is hit by a second photon from the X-ray flash, and so ejected from the atomic shell.

"The LCLS experiment produced an unexpected and unprecedented charge state by ejecting dozens of electrons from an atom," says graduate student and co-author Benedikt Rudek from the Max Planck Advanced Study Group and the Max Planck institute for nuclear physics in Heidelberg, who analysed the data. "The absorbed energy per atom was more than twice as high as expected." This resonance effect is particularly strong for xenon at an energy of 1.5 keV. Consequently, even at a higher energy of 2 keV, the researchers observed only less strongly ionized atoms. Based on the measurements, the CFEL researchers refined a computational model that allows them to calculate such resonances in heavy atoms. In subsequent experiments, scientists used the LCLS to examine, among others, krypton and molecules that contain heavy atoms, as co-author Artem Rudenko from Kansas State University says, who headed one of these follow-up experiments.

The observations also have practical significance for research: "Our results give a recipe for maximizing the loss of electrons in a sample," says Rolles. This can be desirable or undesirable. "For instance, researchers can use our results if they're interested in creating a very highly charged plasma." When investigating biological samples, however, most researchers should avoid the resonance regions of such heavy atoms. "Most biological samples have some heavy atoms embedded," says Rolles. In the resonance region, such samples can be damaged very quickly in these places, which may affect the image quality.

For their precision measurements the team used a special experimental station that was built by the Max Planck Advanced Study Group (ASG) at CFEL together with the Max Planck institutes for nuclear physics, for medical research and semiconductor laboratory. The CFEL-ASG Multi-Purpose chamber (CAMP) was shipped to SLAC in 40 crates weighing a total of 11 tons and was installed at the LCLS for three years. It was used in more than 20 experiments.

Along with researchers from the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science, several Max Planck institutes, DESY and the US National Accelerator Laboratory SLAC, the study involved scientists from about a dozen institutions in Germany, France, Japan and the USA.

Israel Fires Warning Shots Into Syria

JERUSALEM ? Israel was drawn into the Syrian civil war for the first time on Sunday, firing warning shots into the neighboring country after a stray mortar shell fired from Syrian territory hit an Israeli military post.

The Israeli military said the mortar fire caused no injuries or damage at the post in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and then annexed. But in recent weeks, incidents of errant fire from Syria have multiplied, leading Israel to warn that it holds Syria responsible for fire on Israeli-held territory.

"A short while ago, a mortar shell targeted an IDF (Israel Defense Forces) post in the Golan Heights," said army spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich. "We answered with a warning shot toward Syrian areas. We understand this was a mistake and was not meant to target Israel and then that is why we fired a warning shot in retaliation."

The Israeli military also said it has filed a complaint through United Nations forces operating in the area, stating that "fire emanating from Syria into Israel will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity."

Israel and Syria are bitter foes who have fought several wars, but their shared border has been mostly quiet since a 1974 cease-fire. Still, Israel worries that Syria's civil war could spill across into the Golan, and repeated errant fire has intensified that concern.

Israel fears that if Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime is toppled, the country could fall into the hands of Islamic extremists or descend into sectarian warfare, destabilizing the region.

Israeli officials do not see Assad trying to intentionally draw Israel into the fighting, but have raised the possibility of his targeting Israel in an act of desperation. They also fear that Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons or other weapons could slip into the hands of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group ? a close Syrian ally ? or reach other militants if Assad loses power.

Israeli officials also worry that the frontier region could turn into a lawless area like Egypt's Sinai desert, which Islamic militants now use as a launching ground for strikes against southern Israel.

Speaking to his Cabinet on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is "closely monitoring" the border with Syria and is "ready for any development."
