As the contents are regulated by the carries according to strict guidelines, such messages are not considered as spam and are legitimate in most places. SMS marketing usually targeted people in specific geographical areas.

MMS Marketing:

This is the same as SMS marketing except that advertisers can send out text, picture, audio and video messages instead of just text messages. MMS marketing is usually more expensive than SMS marketing because the carrier charges higher rates and the contents are also bytes-heavy.

In-game marketing:

Online games and social media games have become so popular that millions of people play them every day, providing businesses with great opportunities to reach out to customers around the world. Companies can either buy advertisement space for specific time and location or sponsor an entire game. Think of it like a sports event, but online and with a wider reach.

Push notification:

Instead of relying on messaging services, this method of marketing involves sending notifications to the cell phones that appear as unobtrusively as possible at the top of the screen. First used by Apple on its iPhone service and picked up by Android and other phones afterwards, it is usually off limit to smaller companies owing to the high cost of software. Push notification also has a flipside. Customers can become irritated and block the notifications entirely.

Mobile web marketing:

Mobile web marketing is growing in popularity because an increasing number of people are using their cell phones to access the internet for news, communication and shopping. Major content providers like Google, Yahoo and MSN are creating web contents specifically for cell phones and other mobile devices. Businesses can buy advertising space on the web pages and place their ads which will be available to all those who visit the websites.

Bluetooth marketing:

Bluetooth is a popular technology for connecting computer and other electronic devices wirelessly. It is fast, inexpensive and very practical. Bluetooth marketing involves setting up a Bluetooth hotspot in a busy area such as a mall and sending out promotional contents to all the Bluetooth-enabled devices within the area. As most cell phones are equipped with inbuilt Bluetooth technology, this can be a great way to reach out to shoppers.

Proximity systems:

Proximity systems allow companies to send promotional messages to all cell phones within a limited geographical area using GSM?s Short Messaging System ? Cell Broadcast (SMS-CB) protocol. It?s a great way to promote products and services as everyone carrying a cell phone in area covered by the system is automatically targeted. This mobile marketing technology also allows companies track the movement of customers within that area.
